List of largest companies in the hardware world changed slightly compared to last year.Samsung became the largest hardware companies in the world, encouraging HP tosecond place in the list. The recession hit hard several hardware companies; Motorolaand Hitachi have lost almost 40% of their hardware revenue. The combined revenue of more than 100 fell almost 8% to U.S. $ 1,067 billion. Despite the adverse economic,some companies such as Samsung, Apple and RIM successfully developed andstrengened their competitive position.

Samsung hardware revenue grew 4%, while HP fell 14% compared to last year. As a result, Samsung took over first place on the list. LG Electronics also has a very strongresult (hardware revenues 26%), moving up four places to position 4.

Apple is very good; the company jump from position 20 years ago to the Big 10because of strong sales of the iPhone.

Country

United States lead the hardware industry, 40 of the 100 leading companies based in the United States. All other countries with significant hardware industry is in Asia.

The three South Korean companies in the top 100 are very well done this year. This country has a tradition of very large conglomerates, chaebols, the Samsung (1) and LG(4) has a prominent place in the top 100. Memory chip maker Hynix, formerly known asHyundai electronics, is one of the fastest growing companies in the list. Together, theyare evidence of the condition of South Korea's economic interest to manufacturers ofcomputer hardware.

The speed of growth

Less than one third of the companies that have an income higher than last year.Historically, smaller companies grow faster than large companies, at leastpercentage-wise. But this year, many of the fastest-growing companies are from half of the peak Hardware 100.
Apple stands out with the financial results of the star. RIM also showed continued growth in revenue (33%) with smartphone sales, after almost doubling last year's revenue.

Based on our analysis of the hardware industry, we expect the following developmentsfor the coming years:

* The number of hardware companies in Asia Top Hardware 100 will rise further,especially the number of companies from China and South Korea.
* Apple will continue the success and move into some more positions on the list,driven by the introduction IPAD
* Samsung, RIM, Huawei Brocade and tend to raise more revenue, given the strong market position and positive momentum in recent years
* As the economy recovers, most hardware companies will return to revenue growth
* Average revenue growth will rise from -8% to +5% (estimate)

Overall, we expect the computer and communications hardware industry will continue togrow faster than the world economy, on multiple levels. Investors beware: recession willhit on a double impact as well, as we saw last year.
