'The Hangover Part II' biggest comedy of all time at $118.1 million

Shattering numerous records, Warner Bros.’ The Hangover Part II grossed $118.1 million in its first four days to help fuel the best Memorial Day weekend in history at the domestic box office. The sequel is expected to gross another $20 million on Monday for a staggering five-day bow of $138.1 million, setting a new benchmark for comedies.

DreamWorks Animation and Paramount’s Kung Fu Panda 2 also contributed to the boom, grossing $62.4 million in its first four days (like Hangover, Panda opened on Thursday). The 3D toon should end Monday with a five-day total of $68.2 million.

Kung Fu Panda impressed overseas, where it grossed a mighty $57 million from 8,023 markets in only 11 territories. In seven territories, it scored the best opening ever for an animated title and in China, scored the biggest opening of all time for a foreign film in grossing $18.5 million.

Hangover’s foreign numbers weren’t immediately available.

In the U.S., the specialty business also soared, thanks to Woody Allen ’s holdover Midnight in Paris and new entry The Tree of Life, from Terrence Malick .

Tree of Life, grossing $352,320 for the weekend proper as it opened in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, posted a per location average of $88,080—an all-time high for a Fox Searchlight title.

Midnight—which debuted last weekend to a per location average of $99,834—grossed $1.9 million as it expanded into a total of 58 theaters for a 10-day cume of $2.8 million, according to Rentrak.

The overall uptick in theater traffic at the domestic box office was a welcome respite for the film business, which has suffered one of the worst box slumps in history. Grosses for Memorial Day weekend are projected to reach $270 million, easily surpassing the $254 million earned in 2007.

From Todd Phillips, Hangover grabbed the best opening ever for a comedy, besting the $85.7 million earned by Bruce Almighty over Memorial Day weekend in 2003, as well as the biggest Saturday ever for a comedy ($29.7 million).

Hangover and Universal’s Bridesmaids set new benchmarks for the playing power of R-rated comedies. Even with competition from Hangover, Bridesmaids held well over the weekend, declining only 27% to an estimated $16.4 million to place No. 4. On Monday, Bridesmaids is expected to earn another $4.4 million for a domestic cume of $89.4 million.

Hangover should grab the largest five-day opening ever for any R-rated pic, comedy or otherwise. Previous best was The Matrix Reloaded ($134.3 million) and The Passion of the Christ ($125.2 million).

Hangover is a sizeable victory for Warners and co-financing partner Legendary Pictures, and delivered the studio its best Memorial Weekend ever (Terminator Salvation was the previous crown holder at $65.3 million).

“This blows everything out of the water. It’s pretty amazing stuff,” Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said. “Moviegoers love all the characters, and they love the story.”

Hangover is the first title in months to appeal heavily to younger moviegoers, who represented 54% of the audience.

Moviegoers delivered rave reviews for both Hangover and Kung Fu Panda, which drew an A- CinemaScore and A CinemaScore, respectively.

Families turned out in force for Kung Fu Panda, which return Jack Black , Angelina Jolie , Jackie Chan , Dustin Hoffman , Seth Rogen and Lucy Liu return to lead the voice cast. About 45% of the total gross came 3D screens. If the toon had played in Imax, 3D grosses would have likely repped 55% of the total.

“We’re thrilled to have Kung Fu Panda be part of this record-breaking weekend. We came in at high end of expectations. We played very strong to families and kids, who made up 60% of our audience,” DreamWorks Animation president of marketing Anne Globe said.

The original Kung Fu Panda debuted to $60.2 million in early June 2008 at the domestic box office on its way to cuming $215.4 million.

Coming in third at the domestic box office was Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which grossed $39.3 for the three-day weekend and is projected to earn $50 million through Monday. That will bring the film’s domestic cume to $163.7 million.

Overseas, Pirates continued to thrive, grossing an estimated $122.9 million for the three-day weekend. By Monday, the tentpole’s global cume will be $646.5 million, by far the best showing of the year.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Most people have puppy love. A man caught on tape in an East Harlem elevator seems to have the opposite.

The New York Police Department says Irving Sanchez, 46, was arrested after allegedly being caught on an elevator’s surveillance camera brutalizing a pit bull puppy.

The video was captured Sunday in the Wagner Houses in East Harlem. It shows a shocking attack.

Video: Animal Cruelty Caught On Tape

in the video, a man police say is Sanchez is seen walking into the elevator with a small pit bull puppy named Max. Once inside the elevator, the man is seen dragging the dog from side to side of the elevator by its leash, hurling it into the elevator walls.

Then the man leans in and hits the dog repeatedly with the handle of the leash, wielding the strap like a club.

Finally the man starts stepping on the dog and appears to kick him.

Sanchez was arrested the next day. He is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals.

Max was taken to an animal shelter. If guilty, what’s the appropriate punishment in this case? Sound off in our comments section.

GoDaddy.com CEO Under Fire for Killing African Elephant

Godaddy.com CEO Bob Parsons has convinced himself that he's a humanitarian. I think he's got a long way to go before he lives up to that self-billing. He's in the news today because he traveled to Zimbabwe recently to shoot an elephant for a trophy and then released a video in which he is happily grinning over his conquest. Now the man known for racy Super Bowl ads is spinning his version of the event and trying to morph this selfish act of slaughter into some selfless act of charity.

He shot the elephant at night, and claims it was a "problem elephant." It happened to be a bull elephant with sizeable tusks, just the type that trophy hunters like to kill. He seems to be a rather obsessive trophy hunter; one other self-produced video on the web shows him wounding and later killing a leopard, and the current edition of Safari Club International's magazine shows an array of animal heads mounted on his wall as trophies.

If he wants to help the people of Africa, I suggest he spend a day with Oprah Winfrey or Bill Gates and learn how real charitable work on the continent is done. They've invested of their time and considerable wealth to promote education, housing, nutrition, and public health. And last time I checked, they didn't leave a trail of animal victims they've personally slain at the end of their visit. If he wants to help people keep elephants out of crop fields, he should fund the building of solar-powered fences like those successfully used for this purpose in neighboring South Africa. My guess is Mr. Parsons went to Africa to shoot an elephant, and perhaps some other creatures, and then tried to find some high-sounding rationale for his gambit.

I've heard this kind of excuse-making from trophy hunters before. In fact, in my book, The Bond, to be released on April 5, I recount the rhetorical gymnastics and whitewashing of a killing spree also in southern Africa by trophy hunter Ken Behring, who shot several endangered elephants in one of his safaris. Like Parsons, he claimed he did the killing for the good of the community, identifying the animals as "problem elephants." It turns out that wildlife authorities in Mozambique had a different take on the matter, and they wanted Ken Behring to leave their country without delay.

HSUS has about 650 domain names with GoDaddy.com. I've instructed our staff to find another host for them. We don't like doing business with a company with a leader like Parsons. I hope you'll think about following suit. No one needs to kill elephants either to show his manhood or to do humanitarian work.

GoDaddy.com founder defends elephant-hunting video

(CNN) -- The CEO of GoDaddy.com on Friday defended an online video that shows him shooting and killing an elephant in Zimbabwe.

"It takes a guy like me" to protect villagers' crops from rogue elephants, he said.

Bob Parsons, founder of the Scottsdale, Arizona-based web-hosting service, posted the graphic video on his Twitter account on March 14. The footage, shot March 8, shows him hunting an elephant on a farm and posing with a shotgun beside its corpse.

Then, it shows locals crowding around the dead animal and cutting off pieces of its meat.

Parsons said he killed the animal for the good of local farmers whose crops are often destroyed by elephants.

"They would say 'please come back,' " he said, arguing the measure is an effective way to protect crops and feed hungry local residents.

The video shows him walking through a field of flattened sorghum plants, which he said had been crushed by roaming elephants.

The reason he posted the video, Parsons said, is because he wants "people to know what goes on over there."

"There were people who walked 25 miles to get to that elephant," he said, referencing a food crisis that has often plagued developing countries.

But critics call his methods extreme.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals initiated an online boycott of GoDaddy.com and its services until Parsons "stops shooting animals," according to the organization's website.

Parsons' own website has also been inundated by negative comments about the video.

"A lot of the people who are upset about this are animal lovers," Parsons said. "Their heart is in the right place but they just don't understand the situation."

He called the fact that the elephant meat provided food for the people "a bonus."

"They literally have nothing and they're on the brink of starvation," he said.

Parsons has traveled to Zimbabwe for several years, but only last year began hunting elephants at the request of local farmers, he said.

Elephant experts say it is not illegal to kill rogue elephants in Zimbabwe.

Parsons said he has killed five elephants.

PETA rejected Parsons' explanation, with the organization's president, Ingrid Newkirk, releasing a statement saying, "If Bob Parsons really wanted to help African villagers, he would use his money to promote one of the many effective, nonlethal methods available to protect crops -- not act like a little boy with a gun."

In a press release, PETA said it is pulling its business from GoDaddy.com, and the group labeled Parsons "Scummiest CEO of the Year."

Meanwhile, asked if the PETA boycott had affected GoDaddy.com's business, company spokeswoman Elizabeth Driscoll said, "There has been no significant change in business."

GoDaddy.com CEO Fights to Explain Elephant Shooting

In this screenshot of Parsons' hunting video posted on the Video.me website, the GoDaddy.com CEO shoots an elephant bull in Zimbabwe.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – GoDaddy.com CEO Bob Parsons scrambled to explain his motives Friday after a video he put on Twitter of himself killing an elephant in Zimbabwe went viral -- leading to calls for a boycott from animal-rights groups.

In the video, Parsons and a team of others shoot an elephant they claim was destroying farmers' crops in the area.

"They've been here three nights in a row, we're hoping they come back for a fourth. And if they do, well, we're gonna be here to greet 'em," Parsons says with evident relish. The team then waits up at night for the elephants to come. When they do Parsons shoots one of them as an accompanying screen graphic says "Bob Parsons fires again. Both shots hit home."

The CEO can then be seen smiling as he stands over the elephant with his gun before another scene shows local villagers hacking the animal to bits, all while wearing orange GoDaddy.com hats. The scene is accompanied by AC/DC's "Hell's Bells" music.

"When you see me smiling in that picture, I'm smiling because I'm relieved no one was hurt, that the crop was saved, and that these people were going to be fed -- the type of smile when you get a good report card or achieve a goal," Parsons told Mashable Thursday.

"I've been going to Africa for six years," he said, "and I progressively became aware of the elephant situation and what a problem it is for the locals."

Parsons explained to the tech website that far from being an endangered species, elephant herds in Zimbabwe are abundant and a nuisance to local farmers who face the threat of starvation on a constant basis due to elephants destroying their crops.

Non-violent solutions such as fences, fires and loud noises are not enough to ward them off, he explained.

"This farmer was desperate," Parsons said. "He couldn't get the herd out of his field. He asked us to come and deal with it."

However, animal-rights groups were not buying it, claiming that Parsons was using a "flimsy" excuse to disguise his passion for hunting big game.

"Parsons is hiding behind the lame claim that killing elephants helps farmers in Africa whose crops are damaged by the animals," People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said on its website.

"In fact, there are ample effective and nonlethal methods to deter elephants from crops, including using chili-infused string and beehives on poles to create low-cost 'fences.' Instead of coming up with flimsy excuses for killing these highly intelligent and social animals, Parsons should use his wealth to fund humane solutions to human/elephant conflicts."

The group said that it had closed its account with GoDaddy as a result of its CEO's actions and encouraged supporters to do the same.

Rival companies also saw an opening to bash a competitor. Los Angeles-based NameCheap.com was offering special time-limited deals to customers who switched over to their service in protest, saying that it would donate 20 percent of the revenue from new accounts to the Save The Elephants charity.

"All of us at Namecheap were very disturbed by this video," the company said. "Elephants are an endangered species and hunting these for any reason is something we feel strongly against."

Parsons, an ex-Marine who served in Vietnam, told Mashable that while he understood the concern of critics, the situation was more complicated than it appeared.

"These people look at this from the context of being Americans," he said. "We're well-fed and isolated from the process of growing and butchering meat. We see this, and we're horrified. Their hearts are in the right place, but they just don't understand what's going on over there."

GoDaddy.com, a private company founded by Parsons in 1997, operates more than 46 million domain names.

Barça crowned as Messi and Villa shoot down United
Barcelona Wins Champions League Title
Shaka Hislop breaks down Barcelona's third Champions League title in six yearsTags: Shaka Hislop, Champions League, Lionel Messi, Messi, Patrice Evra, Barcelona, analysis, Manchester United, Wayne Rooney

WEMBLEY, England -- The debate is over now. Barcelona is on the list of soccer's all-time greatest teams.

Led by another dominant performance from Lionel Messi, the Catalan club beat Manchester United 3-1 on Saturday to earn its third Champions League title in six seasons and No. 4 overall.

"I feel privileged," Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said. "You always want to win, but the way we have won is what I am most proud of. This is the way we want to play football.

"Lionel is the best player I have seen and probably the best I will ever see."

Messi was typically subdued in his celebration.

"I'm very happy about the match," Messi said. "We were the better team. We deserved to win."

Messi put Barcelona ahead to stay with his 53rd goal and helped create another score to give the Spanish league champion some breathing room.

Barcelona dominated play at Wembley Stadium with its trademark one-touch passing, but it needed the Argentine striker to conjure a 54th-minute solo strike from the edge of the penalty area to take the lead for the second time.

There seemed to be no space as Messi was tracked by fullback Patrice Evra. But the two-time world player of the year spotted a gap between the central defenders and hit a shot down the middle, beating goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

Messi added a fake and run that led to David Villa taking possession on the edge of the area. From there, the Spain striker curled a shot into the top corner of the net.

"They do mesmerize you with their passing and we never really did control Messi," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "But many people have said that.

"In my time as manager, it's the best team I've faced."

Soccer commentators had said before the game that Barcelona, which already had won a third straight Spanish league title, would be ranked among the sport's truly great teams with a victory over United. Now, with four European titles, only Liverpool, AC Milan and Barcelona's fierce rival Real Madrid have won more.

With Pedro Rodriguez scoring the opening goal midway through the first half on an imaginative through ball from Xavi Hernandez, the win was as comprehensive as Barcelona's 2-0 victory over United in the 2009 final in Rome.

[+] EnlargeLionel Messi
LLUIS GENE/AFP/Getty ImagesLionel Messi was the star of the show as Barcelona dominated Manchester United to win its third Champions League title in six years.

"When Rome finished, I thought we had played a good game, but when I looked at it again I wasn't that impressed," Guardiola said. "But it has served its purpose.

"I think we played much better than the game two years ago."

Guardiola now has won 10 titles -- including two European Cups -- in three years.

Wayne Rooney's goal in the 34th minute left it tied at 1 at halftime. Rooney carried the ball to the edge of the area, slipping it to Ryan Giggs. Giggs knocked it back, giving Rooney the perfect opportunity to curl a shot past goalkeeper Victor Valdes at the far post.

Barcelona's performance was so comfortable that Guardiola was able to bring on regular captain Carles Puyol for the last few moments, giving the oft-injured defender the chance to play a part in a memorable triumph.

But in a gesture symbolizing Barcelona's team ethic, Puyol handed the armband over to Eric Abidal. His place on the team had been in doubt after he had surgery this season to remove a liver tumor -- and the France defender lifted the famous trophy.

"Players are human beings," Guardiola said. "Carles has made a great gesture and it has made us stronger."

After a shaky opening, Barcelona simply outclassed the English champions. Xavi, standing in as captain for Puyol, orchestrated play from in front of Sergio Busquets, while Andres Iniesta and Messi hurt United with pinpoint passing.

"This is the reason I came to Barcelona," Villa said. "I'm very happy, very satisfied. We have a team with ambition, a team with the will to win."

United could do little to disrupt Barcelona, the prevailing force of European soccer.

"They were the better team so we can't really argue," United's Rio Ferdinand said. "They're a great side with great players."

Barça crowned as Messi and Villa shoot down United

FC Barcelona 3-1 Manchester United FC
Second-half goals from Lionel Messi and David Villa ended United's challenge at Wembley and earned a fourth European title for Barça.

Barça crowned as Messi and Villa shoot down United
Just as in 1992, Wembley provided the setting for a Catalan celebration as FC Barcelona turned on the style to beat Manchester United FC 3-1 and claim their fourth European crown. Barcelona were worthy winners, taking the lead through Pedro RodrĂguez and responding to Wayne Rooney’s equaliser with two superb second-half strikes from Lionel Messi and David Villa.

If Barcelona’s triumph at the old Wembley broke down a barrier, this underlined the Spanish titleholders’ status as the continent’s dominant force, this third UEFA Champions League in six seasons conferring the stamp of greatness on Josep Guardiola’s side. For United, this was a sorry repeat of their Rome defeat by Barcelona two years ago. There were dancers with umbrellas on the pitch in the opening ceremony and even the simulated sounds of a storm but it was on the pitch that lightning eventually struck twice.

For a short while, it looked like things might turn out differently for the English champions. Sir Alex selected an attacking formation, resisting the temptation to pack his midfield and instead fielding both Javier HernĂ¡ndez and Rooney in attack. His team raced out of the starting blocks, pushing up and aiming to deny Barcelona the time and space to find their stride, and briefly the ploy worked. Barcelona looked edgy as HernĂ¡ndez hustled a defender into losing the ball on the edge of his area; Javier Mascherano, starting in central defence in place of Carles Puyol then failed to deal with Edwin van der Sar’s punt down the middle, forcing ValdĂ©s into urgent action to deny Rooney.

Inevitably, though, Barcelona clicked into gear, and they fashioned the first clear opening on the quarter-hour as Xavi HernĂ¡ndez drove in a low cross that Pedro, drifting free of Fabio, turned wide. Barcelona soon had United pinned back as more chances came. Villa flashed a shot narrowly wide before forcing a low save out of Edwin van der Sar. A superb Nemanja Vidić challenge then foiled Messi but, in the 27th minute, United were undone.

Xavi was the architect, advancing into United territory and picking out Pedro with a diagonal pass. The winger’s movement had carried him clear of Vidić on the right side of the box and he applied a cool finish, sidefooting the ball into the near corner with Van der Sar wrongfooted.

Amid the many predictions about this contest the general consensus seemed to be that United needed the first goal. Yet they responded seven minutes later with a fine equaliser, their first attempt on target. After Barcelona had lost the ball from an Abidal throw-in, Rooney surged forward on a one-two with Michael Carrick. He then slipped a pass to Ryan Giggs inside the box and met the Welshman’s return ball with a superb curled finish into the far corner.

Sir Alex Ferguson had predicted “the final of the decade” and an absorbing first half almost produced another goal when Messi drove forward and after feeding Pedro on the right, was just a whisker away from meeting the return.

United’s respite was short-lived as Barcelona resumed their control after the restart. Although Van der Sar saved from Daniel Alves, Messi restored their lead after 54 minutes. Collecting a pass from Messi, the Argentinian cut inside Patrice Evra and punished Vidić’s failure to close him down by sweeping the ball past Van der Sar from 20 metres. Messi’s subsequent explosion of emotion showed just what the goal – his first on English soil but 12th in this season’s competition – meant.

The little magician could have had more goals as Barcelona went for the kill. Van der Sar denied him with his legs before Fabio denied his back-heeled effort with a goalline block. Van der Sar, on his final appearance, offered a fitting reminder of his class with a full-length dive to foil Xavi but he had no chance with Villa’s third goal after 69 minutes. Although United stopped Messi’s surge into the box, substitute Nani lost out to Sergio Busquets who teed up the Spain striker to curl an exquisite finish into the top corner.

Kirstie Alley’s ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Transformation: A Look Back

Hines Ward Wins 'Dancing With the Stars'; Kirstie Alley Is a Surprise Second

From left to right: Kym Johnson and professional football player Hines Ward, actress Chelsea Kane and partner Mark Ballas, actress Kirste Alley and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

Nobody expected Kirstie Alley to be in the final two, but there she was.

With fellow actress Chelsea Kane vanquished amidst gasps from the crowd, only Hines Ward stood in her way.

But the Pittsburgh Steeler and former Super Bowl MVP threw down the steel curtain and was crowned the "Dancing With the Stars" champion.

"You are the MVP of 'Dancing With the Stars' season 12," judge Carrie Ann Inaba said after Ward and professional partner Kym Johnson finished their last dance. "You learned how to lead the dancing, not only in the dance, but you led your partner out of injury. You dance with heart and it shows."

Ward was chosen by viewer votes combined with judges' scores. All three couples emerged with perfect scores after dancing Tuesday night, which kept the competition tight. Ward came into the season finale tied for first place with Kane, who finished in last place when the votes were tallied. Alley finished second.

Alley was a fan favorite all season, whittling down her body as the daily dance exercise allowed her to shed 38 inches by Tuesday. She was also one of the most amusing contestants on the ballroom floor, losing her shoes during one performance and always getting through her challenges with a smile and a quip.

"I know I'm not alone when I say I love you for being you," Inaba said Tuesday after Alley and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy finished performing. Alley wore the same dress she had worn on day one of the competition -- nipped and tucked by 38 inches.

Kane, who waltzed to the theme from "Harry Potter" with professional partner Mark Ballas, was the first to be eliminated Tuesday.

Wendy Williams, Kendra Wilkinson, Sugar Ray Leonard and other celebrity contestants eliminated from the hit ABC show earlier in the season brought their sometimes stunning, sometimes wacky moves back to the ballroom for the season finale.

The show opened with an all-cast routine and the Black Eyed Peas singing their new single, "Don't Stop the Party," to an energized audience.

Besides the Peas, the Go-Go's played their classic "We Got the Beat" for a frenzied dance routine, and Josh Groban sang "You Raise Me Up" while Petra Nemcova danced. Sara Evans performed "A Little Bit Stronger" at the end of the show, before Ward was crowned champ.

Famed sports announcer Michael Buffer called Leonard and pro wrestler Chris Jericho to the dance floor for a tough-guy dance-off. Wilkinson reprised her sexy, booty-and-bosom-shaking cha-cha, then nearly fell off the judges' table when she finished. Radio personality Mike Catherwood, who was the first contestant dismissed this season, poked fun at his lack of dancing skills and stripped down to a leotard during his goofy routine.

Ralph Macchio, who dazzled judges when the show first started with his quick step, joined partner Karina Smirnoff for a reprise.

Williams was the only contender who didn't take to the dance floor (and probably for the best). She instead interviewed herself during a segment where she said Alley would "be a perfect drinking partner."

The 35-year-old Ward is the second professional football player to win the "Dancing" crown. Emmitt Smith won in 2006.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Lauren Alaina Silent in Makeup -- Haley Is Ready

Lauren Alaina is sitting in the makeup chair silently because an "American Idol" doctor has frozen her throat in a last ditch effort to save her voice ... spies on the "Idol" set tell TMZ.

TMZ broke the story ... Lauren lost her voice and could not finish rehearsing for tonight's finale.

Producers have brought Haley Reinhart to the set and she is currently in wardrobe. If Lauren can't compete, Haley will square off against Scotty McCreery for the title.

We're told Haley just finished rehearsing, and if she does compete tonight she'll sing 3 songs -- "House of the Rising Sun," "I Who Have Nothing" and "Bennie and the Jets."

(CNN) -- "American Idol" is drawing to a close for its 10th season, and you don't even care, do you?

Despite what should be the excitement of having the youngest ... finale ... ever (imagine that being said with "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest-like excitement) with a pair of teen contestants, ratings that have rebounded and a brand new panel of judges, two of whom are viable music stars, there is surprisingly little buzz surrounding the show's two-night finale.

Instead the general feeling appears to be that the "American Idol" finale is happening. Meh.

"It's been a really strange season," said MJ Santilli, who runs one of the most popular blogs among "Idol" fans, MJ's Big Blog. "I think a lot of the early buzz (was) around the judges, but I never got a sense of a lot of buzz around some of the contestants."

Worse than a lack of buzz has been the backlash regarding contestants who were cut early (remember Pia Toscano?) and the final pair -- aspiring country singers Lauren Alaina, 16, and Scotty McCreery, 17.

It remains to be seen how electrifying the finale, which kicks off Tuesday night with performances by the pair and ends Wednesday night with the results show, will be.

Fox has been tight-lipped so far about who will be performing and appearing, though so far judge Steven Tyler, seventh-season winner David Cook and actor Jack Black are reportedly scheduled to make an appearance as well as U2's Bono and The Edge, who will be joining cast members from their Broadway musical, "Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark."

Looking back over the history of what has become the most successful television singing competition ever, few could have predicted what has happened since "Idol" came roaring back for its latest season after a shake-up on the judge's panel.

The show's recognized star maker, Simon Cowell, following in the footsteps of beloved judge, Paula Abdul, left the show -- much to the chagrin of die-hard fans who enjoyed his no-nonsense critiques. Viewers had just barely survived the reign of judges Kara DioGuardi and talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres, whose addition to the long-running series had gone over like a lead balloon with many fans.

Ratings were dropping every season following a show peak in 2006 when close to 36 million viewers tuned in to the season finale to watch Taylor Hicks triumph over Katharine McPhee. That night host Seacrest announced that "an incredible 63.4 million votes came in. That's more than any president in the history of our country has ever received!"

The judges' musical chairs finally ended this season, with only a single original judge -- Randy Jackson -- remaining. He was joined by pop diva and actress Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler.

Add to that flux, the expected competition of new singing shows such as NBC's "The Voice" and Cowell's forthcoming British mega-hit "The X Factor" on Fox and a less than inspiring season nine, and "Idol" looked poised to continue its downward slide in the ratings. Then a funny thing happened on the way to the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, where the "Idol" finale spectacular is held.

The show started looking revived. The new judges had chemistry, the contestants had talent, and suddenly fans began wondering if reports of "Idol's" demise had been premature.

In reporting that the show had reversed the declining ratings trend by "gaining total viewers for the first time since 2007," The New York Times said that "Idol" had a "79 percent higher rating among 18-to- 49-year-olds than the next biggest show, 'Modern Family.' That kind of gap has never been seen before in that demographic in television history, Fox says, citing Nielsen data."

"This kind of dominance suggests, as if there were still doubt, that 'Idol' has become a cultural fixture like "60 Minutes" or "Monday Night Football" or the evening news, one defined by its reliable place on the television schedule each year," the Times said.

Such largess seemed to bear out in the voting tallies as Fox announced that a record-breaking 95 million votes poured in for this season's Top 3 episode -- the largest ever for a nonfinale show.

But blogger Santilli said pundits shouldn't read too much into the number of votes.

"I think that adding online voting this year may have had something to do with the numbers being larger," she said. "Also, people are text voting, and you can send a lot of text votes so I think those numbers are a little bit inflated."

And there doesn't seem to be nearly the enthusiasm for the finalists that contestants have enjoyed in the past. Fans have cried foul over the early exit of favorites Toscano and James Durbin, both of whom were projected to make it to the finale.

Message boards are not dominated by fans of the final two, Alaina and McCreery, nor are the singers close to generating as much excitement as the ending of "The Oprah Winfrey Show," which happens the same day as the finale results show.

And while the pop culture thermometer, Twitter, saw a huge trending wave about McCreery's hometown visit last week, the trending subject was country singer Josh Turner, who made a surprise appearance onstage with McCreery.

Not even the professionals seem to be all that enthused.

A recent article by Phyllis Stark, executive editor of country music at Radio-Info.com, quoted sources as saying that country radio types are not hot on either Alaina or McCreery, both of whom have been dubbed country artists.

"But country radio broadcasters may not throw open their doors to these (Alaina and McCreery)," Stark writes. "In fact, if he doesn't come with an undeniable hit single, McCreery in particular may meet with a lukewarm or even chilly reception in some markets, where certain programmers have been turned off by his frequent Josh Turner impersonating performances and quirky mannerisms."

Season three finalist Diana DeGarmo sympathizes with this year's final two.

Diana DeGarmo, who was 16 when she lost out by a small margin to Fantasia Barrino in the finale, said most people forget the added pressure young contestants face having to keep up with their studies while competing.

"In between rehearsals and when other people are resting or other contestants are getting time to just go and hang out, they are probably having to go and finish classes," said DeGarmo, who is on tour with the musical "9 to 5" and will be performing with other "Idol" alumni at a concert outside the Nokia Theatre before the finale. "On my finale, I was writing my final term papers in between the rehearsals."

She said she believes the attention aimed at the new judges' panel has been beneficial, even if it hasn't always been equal to the shine the contestants have been receiving.

"When you have people of that caliber join the show to judge, of course people are going to be curious, but I think it brings more attention to the show all around," DeGarmo said. "It sparks conversation around the water cooler. But they've had really good contestants this year, and people who are in my industry don't get to watch TV on a nightly basis, but it was interesting that my peers still knew about people in the show."

Whether the contestants continue to be well-known beyond the show remains to be seen. Part of the issue for the final two could be that they have so much in common, Santilli said.

"For the first time, you have two contestants that are very similar," she said. "We have never had that before. They are about the same age, and they both sing country."

Network executives don't seem too worried. Leading up to the finale, Mike Darnell, Fox president of alternative entertainment, told The Hollywood Reporter he had faith in the show's voters.

"It has always been about America's decision," he said. "And they've done pretty well over the years. Do I always agree with the winner? No. But that's my own personal feelings, and America is in charge -- that's what makes the show work."

Lauren Alaina May Drop Out of 'American Idol' Finale

Lauren Alaina may not get her shot to be the next "American Idol" because she has lost her voice ...spies on the set tell TMZ ... and it could be the break of a lifetime for Haley Reinhart.

Lauren Alaina Voice
We're told during the rehearsal this afternoon, Lauren -- who has been losing her voice -- was supposed to sing three songs. She got through the first, struggled through the second and was unable to perform the third.

Our spies say a doctor on the set has ordered Lauren not to sing or speak, but there is a "real possibility" she will not be able to perform on tonight's show.

0524_lauren_vid_launchWe're told if Lauren is unable to perform, producers will reinstate the third place finisher -- Haley Reinhart who will then compete against Scotty McCreery for the title.

Producers are trying to find Haley right now.

Live at American Idol: Final Performance Night Falls Flat

After three months of buildup to the grand finale of American Idol season 10, we have to say we were kind of let down by night one. Sure, we saw Lauren Alaina overcome a blown vocal chord to snag the judges vote for the night and enjoyed Taio Cruz performing live (David Cook was pretaped, *feigning shock*), but something was missing and we can't seem to put a finger on it.

So what was going on in the Nokia Theatre when the cameras weren't rolling? And why was Scotty McCreery answering for Lauren in the postshow press conference?

MORE: Scotty McCreery on American Idol Finale: "This Isn't a Competition"

If it wasn't already obvious, American Idol's two night finale kick-off wasn't the stuff past shows were made of. After weeks of rehearsal and preparation, we were surprised at how edgy everything felt. And not in a good way.

Although Nokia Live was packed with 7,000 screaming fans holding up neon signs and getting riled up over the sight of the 11 eliminated contestants sitting in the front row, the intimacy and warmth of the usual Idol stage setting was no where to be found.

American Idol, Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery Michael Becker / FOX; Adam Rose/FOX; ABC/ERIC MCCANDLESS

Scotty and Lauren were visibly nervous, the judges seemed to show zero emotion during their performances, and it was difficult to truly enjoy the show when people's Twitter alerts were gong off right and left.

Of course, there was one cute moment we caught when the show cut to commercial. After round two when the judges finally gave their first critiques, Scotty began to exit the stage before Lauren. Not wanting to be left behind, she ran after Scotty and embraced him in a huge bear hug from behind before they disappeared backstage. Clearly there isn't any tension between the two.

They made this more evident postshow when the two stopped by the press room to talk about the final showdown, that to many, didn't really seem like much of a battle. Lauren, unable to speak due to doctor's orders to stay on vocal rest, had a pen and writing pad in hand which she used to write her answers to questions. Scotty, the gentleman that he is, helped Lauren out by reading her answers to the press room, an act that was not only endearing and sweet, but showed how much he cares about her.

When asked how they felt about their final performances, both had positive things to say, but didn't seem to have their usual sparkle.

"For me, I went out there and did my best and left everything out on the stage," Scotty said. "So our work is done and now it's up to America."

Lauren's response about her final performance? A short and sweet note: "It was good."

Who are you voting for to be the next American Idol? Do you think Lauren's blown vocal chord affected her performance? Did you like the first night of the finale? Who do you think will win? Let us know in the comments!

Kirstie Alley Weight Loss: 38 Inches Since 'Dancing With The Stars' Debut

LOS ANGELES — When Kirstie Alley performs on the "Dancing With the Stars" season finale, she'll do it in a much smaller dress than the one she wore on the season premiere.

Kirstie Alley Dancing With The Stars

The costume Alley wore for her "Dancing" debut had to be taken in 38 inches for her to wear again for the show's closing episode Tuesday. She will reprise her opening-night dance, the cha-cha, in her original costume – minus about 38 inches in alterations from throughout the outfit.

The 60-year-old actress has been noticeably shrinking week after week, but she was coy when asked Monday how much weight she has lost during her two and a half months on the show.

"There will be some reveal of that at some point, but I really didn't care," she said. "As long as I kept changing and changing and changing, I really didn't care. It was like, keep whittling, whittling, whittling. And the other thing that's really more significant to me – I mean, I love the whittling, I like being skinny – I'm really strong and really agile, and it gave me a new life."

Alley's costumes have gotten progressively smaller and skimpier as she has continued on the show.

"We are constantly taking in and altering Kirstie's costumes," said designer Randall Christensen. "Isn't she looking incredible?"

The one-time "Fat Actress" wowed in a body-hugging catsuit during her freestyle dance Monday. After the performance, Judge Carrie Ann Inaba told Alley that she has become "the new poster child for life as it should be lived at 60 years old."

A new "Dancing" champ will be named Tuesday. Alley is up against actress Chelsea Kane and football star Hines Ward.

Lady Gaga’s $0.99 Album Download Overwhelms Amazon

Lady Gaga fans were delighted Monday to learn that they could download her new album, Born This Way, from Amazon for a mere $0.99 — until, of course, technical difficulties set in.

Downloads of the album are delayed, leaving folks unable to get the entire album immediately upon purchase. Amazon issued the following statement:

Amazon is experiencing high volume and downloads are delayed. If customers order today, they will get the full Lady Gaga, Born This Way album for $0.99. Thanks for your patience.

However, the damage has already been done, as users are meting out one-star ratings in droves, most of which deal with Amazon’s slow service as opposed to the quality of the music (although some reviews in the lower bracket did dub the disc “disappointing”). As a result, the album has a relatively low three-star rating.

Reviews of the following nature reign: “This review isn’t a review of the album, but of the Amazon’s digital music service. I tried this as an experiment to see if I wanted to order more music this way, but it only downloaded half the songs. Still a deal at 99cents, but not an experiment I’ll want to repeat with a full-price album.”

Many reviews also trumpet the user’s intent to buy from iTunes in the future, instead of Amazon — a state of affairs Amazon would want to avoid, considering iTunes already holds most of the market share for digital music.

This backlash does not bode well for the future popularity of Amazon’s new Cloud Player service, which the company was touting in the promotional language of the deal, offering users more storage space for buying the album.

Lady Gaga

Amazon.com Inc.’s one-day, 99-cent promotion of Lady Gaga’s highly anticipated second studio album, “Born This Way,” is resulting in downloading delays on the Internet retailer’s website due to high volume, the company said Monday.

Amazon thanked users for their patience on its website and on Twitter, saying consumers who ordered “Born This Way” on Monday would get the full Lady Gaga album for the promotional price. Lady Gaga, a Grammy-winning multiplatinum pop star, is known for an unusual sense of style as well as hits including “Just Dance” and “Poker Face.”

A majority of Amazon users’ reviews for the album were poor, although they mostly focused their complaints on an inability to download all 14 tracks.

An Amazon representative wasn’t immediately available to provide additional comment on the delays.

Jennifer Aniston Debuts New 'Do in 'Horrible Bosses'

Jennifer Aniston New Line Cinema Jennifer Aniston has made a career out of playing good girls. Heck, she even played the title role in a movie called, you guessed it, "The Good Girl." So, it's no surprise that people have noticed Aniston's role in the upcoming flick, "Horrible Bosses" breaks the trend. She plays a dentist who is annoying, inappropriate, disrespectful... in short, anything but good.

The comedy, which co-stars Colin Farrell, Kevin Spacey, and Jason Bateman, features a new look for Aniston. For the first time in a long time, she won't rock blond hair. She's dyed her hair dark brown, a not-so-subtle sign that her character is bad to the bone. Even the movie's poster refers to her as a man-eater.

See the exclusive 'Horrible Bosses' posters >>

Aniston, whose hair has long inspired many an online search, is getting renewed interest in her luscious locks. Over the past 24 hours, Web lookups on "jennifer aniston new haircut" have surged an astounding 350,000%. Related searches on "jennifer aniston new haircut pictures" spiked 2,500%. So, yeah, who needs "the Rachel," anyway?

But it's not just Aniston's hair that has people talking. It's the role, too. In the film, Aniston plays a dentist who sexually harasses her helpless underling, played by Charlie Day of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia."

'Horrible Bosses' New Line Cinema In the trailer, which is not safe for the young 'uns, Aniston goes completely over-the-top with her harassment, which Day's character can't stand. He and his friends, played by Bateman and Jason Sudeikis (who both also have "horrible bosses"), decide to take things into their own hands by offing the bosses with the help of a "murder consultant" played by Jamie Foxx.

While Aniston's new look is garnering the lion's share of attention, the film is also hot on the Web. Over the past week, searches on "horrible bosses" and "horrible bosses trailer" are both up over 400%. And, in a sign that is sure to please the studio's bean counters, Web searches for "horrible bosses release date" are on the up and up.

The film (and, with it, Aniston's new hair) hits theaters on July 8

NO Doomsday >> Still open for business

Arnold Schwarzenegger puts movie comeback on hold

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Arnold Schwarzenegger has placed his movie comeback on hold "until further notice" to focus "on personal matters," the lawyer for the former California governor said Thursday.

The announcement comes two days after the revelation that Schwarzenegger fathered a child with his former housekeeper.

It comes on the same day comic book creator Stan Lee's company announced it would stop plans to produce "The Governator," a children's comic book and TV show based on Schwarnegger's life.

"In light of recent events, A Squared Entertainment, POW, Stan Lee Comics, and Archie Comics, have halted production," the statement said. The statement was a revision from an earlier one that said the companies "have chosen to not go forward with the Governator project."

Schwarzenegger's entertainment lawyer, Patrick Knapp, said in a statement provided to CNN that all plans for new films are suspended.

"At the request of Arnold Schwarzenegger we asked Creative Artists Agency to inform all his motion picture projects currently under way or being negotiated to stop planning until further notice," Knapp said.

Schwarzenegger had been scheduled to start production in August on his first movie since leaving the governor's office in January.

"Governor Schwarzenegger is focusing on personal matters and is not willing to commit to any production schedules or timelines," Knapp said. "This includes Cry Macho, the Terminator franchise and other projects under consideration."

Schwarzenegger, who was once one of Hollywood's highest-paid actors, appeared on his way to renewing a film career that was interrupted by his political career. The comeback plans will resume "when Governor Schwarzenegger decides," Knapp said.

The statement did not indicate how Schwarzenegger would focus on his "personal matters," or if they included meeting with the son who he only publicly acknowledged this week.

Schwarzenegger acknowledged Tuesday that he fathered a child "over a decade ago," but he did not identify the mother.

The New York Times, citing two friends of the family, reported that the mother is Mildred Patricia Baena, who worked for two decades as housekeeper for the Schwarzenegger family.

Neither Baena nor her son have been seen at their home in Bakersfield, California, since the scandal became public.

The son is "a wonderful, very respectful, very intelligent young man," according to a neighbor who said she often spoke to him.

"He's very well-centered and he's just not your everyday kid," said Marty Steelman, who lives next door to the home that the boy and his mother moved into last summer.

A real estate agent told her Schwarzenegger helped purchase the house "for a staff member that was retiring," Steelman said in a CNN interview Thursday.

Property records indicate that Baena took out a mortgage when she bought the house last June.

The boy, now 13, was born less than a week after Maria Shriver gave birth to another Schwarzenegger son, Christopher, according to birth records obtained Wednesday by CNN.

CNN is not identifying the child.

"The son is a wonderful, very respectful, very intelligent young man," Steelman said. "He's got great manners."

The boy would stop by her home and chat, once to sell something for a fundraiser for his middle school, she said. He told her husband that he is interested in martial arts, she said.

The child often played basketball in his back yard, she said. He knocked on her door several times to retrieve the ball after it bounced over the fence into her yard, she said.

"He's just a really nice kid," Steelman said. "If you had the choice of picking a child for mentoring, he would be the type of child that you would take on immediately and enjoy every minute of it."

The house, which sits on a cul-de-sac in an upscale neighborhood of Bakersfield, has a swimming pool in the back yard, she said.

Although the family moved in last summer, the mother was there only on weekends until about eight weeks ago, Steelman said. She told her she was commuting to a job in Los Angeles, which is more than 100 miles from Bakersfield, she said.

The birth certificate listed the father as the man Baena was married to at the time. However, divorce papers obtained by CNN say the couple separated less than three weeks after the October 2, 1997, birth. She is a 50-year-old native of Guatemala, according to the document.

The Los Angeles Times, which first reported the story early Tuesday, quoted the woman as saying she recently retired "on good terms" with the couple after working for them for 20 years.

Schwarzenegger has provided support for the child since birth, one source told CNN.

The revelation that Schwarzenegger fathered a child outside his marriage came a week after Schwarzenegger and Shriver jointly announced they were "amicably separating." No reason for their split was given at the time.

The developments have been "very hard" for Schwarzenegger, and the actor "is doing everything he can to take full responsibility to take all of the spotlight off his children and wife," a source close to Schwarzenegger told CNN.

"He realizes the terrible mistake he made and has a lot of work to do to repair his relationship with his family," the source said, adding that Schwarzenegger has asked people around him to not talk about his relationship with his wife and their four children, who range in age from 13 to 21.

"He's in touch with his family and talked to them last night and apologized to them," the source said Tuesday, noting that Maria Shriver, his wife of 25 years, was among the family members he spoke with.

Shriver, meanwhile, joined talk show legend Oprah Winfrey on Tuesday for a taping of the Oprah Surprise Spectacular -- part of the final episodes of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" scheduled to air next week.

As she walked onstage with longtime Oprah confidant Gayle King, thousands in Chicago's United Center jumped to their feet and erupted in applause.

Earlier Tuesday, Shriver released a written statement describing "a painful and heartbreaking time."

"As a mother, my concern is for the children," she said. "I ask for compassion, respect and privacy as my children and I try to rebuild our lives and heal. I will have no further comment."

A source close to Shriver said Tuesday that the former NBC anchor and her children were "circling the wagons and are working through" the family crisis.

Schwarzenegger has issued a statement saying he told his wife about the child after he left the governor's office in January.

"I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family," he said. "There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry."

Schwarzenegger's four children were told about their sibling only recently, with Shriver "methodically" talking to them, the source said. They were "well prepared" before it became public, the source said.

Schwarzenegger, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Austria who gained fame as the youngest winner of the Mr. Universe bodybuilding contest, was governor until January. He has been busy in recent months reviving his acting career and signing movie deals -- including plans for another installment of his "Terminator" series.

CNN's Thelma Gutierrez and Traci Tamura contributed to this report.

Maria Shriver-Arnold Schwarzenegger Scandal Expose

Maria Shriver, who hired a divorce lawyer after husband Arnold Schwarzenegger's admission that he fathered a child with the housekeeper, has joined at least three generations of Kennedy women who have been stung by womanizing.

A dynamic, smart professional, Shriver gave up her career as a successful television newswoman in 2003 when Schwarzenegger -- a former Austrian body builder and larger-than-life actor of "Terminator" fame -- was elected California governor.

"It's a mystery; isn't Maria Shriver a modern woman who had to assert herself in work and raise her daughters to believe that boys couldn't do this to them?" said Stanton Peele, a psychologist who has blogged about the couple's marital woes for Psychology Today.

Shriver, 55, is the granddaughter of Joseph Kennedy, the patriarch of the Irish-American political clan, who carried on affairs with Hollywood actresses, and the niece of President John F. Kennedy, who was rumored to have slept with numerous women, including actress Marilyn Monroe.

The wives were silent as long the infidelities didn't arrive on their doorsteps. "Those people keep their secrets," Peele said. "And I believe [Shriver] learned that message from her family.

"It was a family cultural characteristic that they learned to accept, starting with the grandfather," he said. "That was the family creed that was taught."

In Schwarzenegger's case, however, Shriver apparently didn't learn of his love child until several months ago and one psychologist emphasized that she is not at fault.

Psychologists and sociologists have a name for the way in which trauma and relationship patterns are passed down through families: intergenerational transmission. They point to battered wives who raise daughters who are beaten and victims of sexual abuse who go on to abuse their own children, continuing an unconscious cycle.

When the Los Angeles Times interviewed a dozen women in 2003 who said they had fought off Schwarzenegger's unwanted sexual advances between 1975 and 2000, Shriver denied that Kennedy women look the other way.

The women who had worked with Schwarzenegger said they had thought they were powerless to report the actor, who admitted he had "behaved badly."

"Well, you know, that ticks me off. ... I am my own woman," Shriver told friend Oprah Winfrey on her TV show. "I have not been, quote, 'Bred' to look the other way. I look at that man [Schwarzenegger] back there in the green room straight on, eyes wide open, and I look at him with an open heart."

This time, however, Schwarzenegger crossed the line by sleeping with the family's longtime housekeeper, Mildred Patricia Baena, during daytime romps in the couple's Brentwood home while Shriver was away, Peele said. The woman the family called "Patty" gave birth to a son, who is now 14.

"Joe Kennedy could [sleep with actress] Gloria Swanson, but he couldn't bring it home or insult or defile Rose Kennedy," he said. "You might say Arnold Schwarzenegger learned the cultural thing to do perfectly. Men do whatever they want until it's discovered in the home. Then 'boom,' it's over."

The late Sen. Ted Kennedy's wife, Joan, was perhaps the longest-suffering Kennedy wife, drowning herself in alcohol and blaming the 1969 Chappaquiddick scandal on the dissolution of their marriage. Kennedy admitted responsibility for the drowning death of Mary Jo Kopechne, 27, in a fatal car crash on Martha's Vineyard, as his wife stood at his side. She later miscarried.

Her brother-in-law, Jack Kennedy, often referred to the leggy blonde Joan as "the dish," and, like his wife, Jackie, Joan supported the family's political causes while ignoring persistent rumors of infidelities.

Listening to a videotape of her 1958 wedding to the youngest Kennedy brother, Joan heard Jack whisper to Ted that marriage "didn't mean that you had to be faithful."
